Mental Health Initiative - First Aid Training and More

What is Mental Health First Aid?
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a groundbreaking, internationally recognized evidence-based training program committed to empowering individuals to identify, understand and respond to those in mental health and substance abuse crises.  MHFA encompasses two curricula: a core program tailored for adults called Adult Mental Health First Aid and Youth Mental Health First Aid, a training program for adults that work with youth. Each are available as interactive 8-hours courses and can be conducted as a one-day seminar or across multiple days to accommodate tight schedules.

Here's what you can expect to learn at the training:

  • What are common mental health disorders? What do they look and feel like?
  • Typical vs. Atypical youth development (Youth MHFA)
  • Signs and symptoms of mental health and substance abuse emergencies
  • A five-step action plan to connect people in crisis to support systems
  • Myth busting and fact sharing about mental health and emotional challenges
  • Non-judgmental communication and listening skills
  • Local, state, and national behavioral health resources
  • The aims of Mental Health First Aid are to:

Reduce stigma

  1. Create a common language around mental health
  2. Help to preserve life when a person may be a danger to self or others
  3. Help others identify, prevent or intervene early when mental health challenges occur
  4. Promote and enhance recovery

The World Experience Comes to Denver (Golden)

The World Vision Experience is a mobile exhibit that travels through the US, providing an opportunity for people to experience what it’s like to live on the margins of society around the world. During a 15-minute “journey" through the Experience, participants will be guided through the stories of three families living in poverty around the world, and hear how these families have found hope and healing through God’s love and the work of World Vision. You can watch a brief trailer for the Experience at worldvisionexperience.org

This exhibit is a powerful tool that will inspire your congregation and community to take action and follow God’s call to serve the poor, forgotten, and oppressed around the world. I encourage you to announce this event during one of your services, and invite your church to attend.
